Action between CTG Brasil, Environmental Military Police and Public Ministry takes place in the reservoir of UHE Canoas I, in Cândido Mota

A joint action between CTG Brasil, with the support of the Environmental Military Police, the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Special Action Group for the Defense of the Environment (GAEMA), marks the resumption of the work started last year in the reservoir of the Canoas I Hydropower Plant, on the Paranapanema River. This new action will now be concentrated in the Água do Macuco district, in the municipality of Cândido Mota (SP), and will seek to identify and demobilize irregular constructions located in Permanent Preservation Areas (APP).

In this first stage, of identification, scheduled to take place this Monday and Tuesday, the 10th and 11th, the Land Management teams from CTG Brasil (concessionaire of the Canoas I HPP), the Environmental Military Police and the Cândido Mota City Hall will attach stickers to the existing buildings, identifying them and notifying those responsible about their irregular condition and the need to voluntarily demobilize these structures.

The owners of the adhesives must contact the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Cândido Mota (Rua Júlia Bertiotti, 179) by May 15 to register their responsibility. If the owners do not identify themselves within the deadline, these buildings will be considered abandoned and will be subject to demobilization in the second stage, which should take place in the second half of May, on a date to be informed in due course.

In 2022, this same type of joint action was successfully carried out in the reservoir of the Canoas I Power Plant, in Palmital. A total of 78 irregular constructions were demobilized, totaling 630 m3 of materials that were in Permanent Preservation Areas, a significant volume. More than 60 truck trips were needed to remove these materials and clean these areas, destined for environmental conservation.

Irregular interventions, besides having been built in permanent preservation areas, encourage predatory fishing, hunting, and can generate environmental imbalance. Actions like this, in partnership with protection agencies, reinforce our concern with the environment”, says Ivan Toyama, CTG Brasil’s Land Manager.

To contribute to the preservation of natural resources and to guarantee the multiple use of all its reservoirs, CTG Brasil also maintains the “Legal Space” program, a guidebook whose main objective is to orient communities around the reservoirs about the regular occupation and the correct use of these areas. The guide is available for download.
