Five of our HPPs are qualified to offer RECs

The company’s goal is to commercialize Renewable Energy Certificates to clients and expand business opportunities for the country’s main players

CTG Brasil, one of the largest clean energy generators in the country, has qualified the five largest hydropower plants in its portfolio to offer Renewable Energy Certificates, known as RECs, proving the 100% clean origin of the energy generated. The qualified HPPs are Ilha Solteira, Jupiá, Capivara, Taquaruçu, and Rosana. The company should expand the initiative to its other assets, according to the growth in demand.

“The initiative reinforces CTG’s global core business, which is to generate clean and renewable energy, and expands our commercial opportunities with the possibility of approaching players with the need to certify the origin of the energy purchased,” says Vitor Lazzareschi, CTG Brasil’s Commercialization Director. The first certificates were commercialized to large companies in the pharmaceutical, metallurgical and energy sectors.

RECs are an energy attribute certificate that offer traceability for each megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from a renewable source. The RECs sold by CTG Brasil have an international seal, with traceability and provenance guaranteed by The International REC Standard, and by Instituto Totum, the local issuing body and representative of the International REC Standard.

CTG Brasil’s initial strategy is to commercialize the RECs throughout Brazil, in several submarkets, with availability both for companies that wish to buy energy from CTG Brasil together with the REC certificate, and for those that are clients of the company and wish to validate their renewable origin.  The sales potential is linked to the physical guarantee of the qualified plants. The certification process of the plants for the commercialization of the certificates began in 2021 in a project led by the ESG area, in partnership with the commercialization area.

“Far beyond a competitive differential in energy sales, the RECs are directly aligned with our ESG strategy and our ambition to be a protagonist in discussions on Climate Change and Energy Transition, contributing so that our clients buy energy from a clean matrix”, explains Salete da Hora, Director of ESG & Brand at CTG Brasil.
